STOP 3 Big Idea:  Natural Changes in the Woods

How does nature change in the woods?

Do you see a Eastern Hemlock tree with a cracked rock in front of the tree? The water that got into the rock in the winter, then the water froze, expanded, and formed a crack.

The tree's roots grew bigger and cracked the rock some more. The rock and tree that are around the crack are changing. If you come back to Sewall Woods in ten years, everything will be very different.

Three Reasons to like this tree.....
This coniferous tree provides shelter for lots of animals.
Porcupines like to eat the insides of the bark.
The tannin in its bark was once used for tanning leather. Tannin is also
found in tea leaves, and it gives tea its dark color.
The wood is used for framing houses and for boxes.
