Third Grade Class, 2012 and Seventh Grade
Welcome to the Sewall Woods Digital Trail!
The Sewall Woods Digital Trail Project is a collaboration between the Kennebec Estuary Land Trust (KELT), KELT's Education Coordinator Becky Kolak, Ms. Newkirk’s third grade class, and Ms. Wright’s 7th and 8th grade students from Regional School Unit 1, in Bath, Maine. The project was made possible through generous grants from Project Learning Tree. and the Davenport Foundation. Technical assistance was provided by Kyle Jongerden and Tyler Patten, technology coordinators for RSU1. Many thanks to John Swenson, the Sewall Trail Steward, and Trey Milam, who put in the QR posts.
During the spring 2012, the 3rd grade students under the mentorship of 7th grade students developed a digital interpretative guide for a section of the Whiskeag Trail in Sewall Woods Preserve, a KELT property. That year students made several visits to the trail to record their observations and take photographs. Then they wrote the guide back in the classroom. Each site will explain a "Big Idea" about the stop on the trail and "Three reasons to like a tree".
In May 2013, the project was expanded to spotlight poetry about trees. The 3rd gradestudents visited the preserve to observe and read aloud poems by well known poets. Then with the help of 8th grade students, they recorded the poems back in the classroom. You can hear the students read the poems beginning at stop 9. We hope that as you walk the trail, you will learn a bit about our local trees and enjoy the poetry of the forest!
We are grateful to the Seventh and Eighth Grade Students from BMS who helped with this project, on the trail and in the classroom:
