Stop 2

STOP 2  Big Idea: Shade and Sunlight
There are many pine tree saplings in this part of Sewall Woods. They are able to grow because of the sunlight coming though the openings in the trees. There are shady spots and sunny places in Sewall Woods. Some plants grow in the shade. Moss holds water so when everything else is dry the animals can drink the water. Moss is used for birds nests as well. Ferns can grow in the shade in moist areas. Ferns and moss do not have seeds like other plants, instead they release spores. In the spring, the tops of baby ferns are curled up, and are called fiddleheads.

Red Maple Tree
Three reasons to like this tree...
It has leaves that turn bright red in the fall.

It likes to live in wet places like swamps.
The seeds from this tree are eaten by wildlife in early spring.
